On Tuesday, January 24th the PHS Honors English placement exam will be administered to all 8th grade students interested in taking Honors English as a 9th grader. The results of this assessment will be applied to the scheduling matrix referred to during Mr. Robert Feltmann's presentation on the evening of January 5th. The exam will only be given to interested students. Any students not interested in 9th grade Honors English will follow their normal schedule. If you have any questions please call Mrs. Snyder or Mrs. Hamilton at the middle school. Students will be asked to sign up for the exam during their SMS ELA core class during the week of January 17th.

It is the time of year for reflection, the time that we take stock, relax, sit back and enjoy the blessings afforded to us through hard work, perseverance, and sometimes luck.

I have wavered in how I wanted to word this post- whether to tie in a quirky story, research, or just shoot straight....I've decided to go with the latter.

Many of our children will "give thanks" or "count the blessing" of technology. I mean what child(especially our middle schoolers) can possibly live without their iPhone of iPod? As a parent, I'm not so sure I would count this as a blessing...many of you may know why.

Our children are virtual prey, they innocently log on to their electronic devices behind closed doors, at the park, at friend's houses. Once they log on they may choose to enter virtual chat rooms or online video conferencing. Their innocence makes them truly believe that the other individuals with whom they are conversing are teens, like themselves. Sometimes, the other individuals on the other end of the OoVoo screen are young looking adults with less than innocent intentions. This scenario is not new, we know the dangers of the internet, our children tend to ignore them.

What I am asking in this time of Thanksgiving is for parents to start watching, leaving doors open, closely monitoring technological interactions- my own children call it "PVS" (Parental Virtual Stalking). Protect our children from online predators, inappropriate video conversations, people with less than valor intentions.

Remember that in the life of your children, you are the blessing that often goes unrecognized and unaccounted for.

How do we teach the true meaning of words?

Each evening I make of habit of reflecting on the day's events and my reactions to them. I think about how to handle certain situations better, how to be a positive influence and create an atmosphere for your children which is kind and inviting to promote our ultimate goal. Last night's reflection had me pondering the meaning of words.....

Words like "love". Which has so many connotations and how we as educators, adults, parents teach our children about this word. How do we explain to children that when we say we "love" cheeseburgers and then in the next phrase tell them we "love" them it means something completely different. Something more meaningful, wordless, priceless, above all else. I believe the meaning of "love" is derived through our actions. Sleepless nights, homework battles, wiffleball games, hugs, nighttime stories, laughter. Children feel the meaning of "love" before they understand the definitions. As parents, "love" is actually easy to define.

"Tolerance" and "respect" are two more words which mean so much and are so easy to use. Again, our true definition of these words is shown through actions, modeling, and sharing of moments. We need to keep in mind that our children model our behavior (they will never agree that this is true. When we get upset at the driver in front of us and say something mean that goes into our kids' "tolerance" definition. When we forget to wait our turn in line that goes into our kids' "respect" definition. When we tell someone their opinion is worthless, "tolerance" and "respect" is defined.

We need to practice what we teach to our kids, and always be conscious of our actions in front of them. Regardless of what they lead us to believe, when out of our sight, our kids do model us more than they know.

Walk to Ritas

220 Stewartsville Middle School students participated in the Student Council's fundraiser, "Walk to Ritas". The event raised $1,000 for the Good Grief Foundation. Take a look, along with getting a chance to exercise, the kids had a great time for a great cause. A thank you goes out to all the parents who helped chapereone, the Greenwich Township Police Department for traffic control and The Fagans, owners of the Greenwich Ritas.

The Passage of Time

To my four year old time passes through meals...Mommy and Daddy go to work at breakfast and come home a little past lunch. Sometimes he lets me know when I'm late. "Mama, it was too long after lunch when you decided to come home."

As children grow the way they view time changes so dramatically. To our teenagers Algebra class lasts for HHHOOOUUURRSSS and summers for only seconds. For parents, time just passes too quickly. Suddenly our curly top babes are young men and women whom we barely recognize with deep voices, broad shoulders, and attitudes that develop overnight.

Every September, I so enjoy sharing the passage of time with your children. In the seconds which passed this summer our children grew literally feet, chunky baby faces thinned out, and voices have finished their spring crackles.

Today was a wonderful start to what I know will be a school year that we as parents, will view as too short and our young adults as way too long!

On August 25th SMS will hold its annual open house. Each grade level is assigned a specific time frame to attend a short informational session, attain bus passes, and set up individual lockers. Students must be accompanied by an adult. Please be advised that this will be the only opportunity for students to enter the building prior to the September 6th beginning of school. If your child cannot attend there will be an opportunity on the first day of school for him/her to set up their locker. Bus passes for those who can not attend can be picked up by a parent or guardian in the main office of the middle school from 8-2:00 Monday-Thursday beginning August 26th.

The 8th grade room parents have provided $1.00 Rita gift certificates to our promoted 8th grade class. I, unfortunately, forgot to hand them to my students on Thursday.

If I did not catch your child at the park or riding his/her bike in town, please have them stop by the school on Friday, June 17th or Tuesday, June 21st between 9:00 and 2:00 to pick theirs up.

I apologize for the inconvenience and forgetting to get these gifts to my eighth grade promotion students.

"Different not Less"

Everyone in the world is different. Whether you're short, tall, big or small. Though different is good, different makes you yourself. If everyone was the same the world wouldn't be the world we all know and love

Autism awareness brings to the attention of the world that just because you might not be able to express what you want to say in words or because you experience the world differently doesn't make anyone better than you or you lesser than anyone. Autistic kids can be very smart but expressing what they want to say can be a challenge at times.

When someone has autism, his or her brain has trouble with an important job: making sense of the world. Everyday your brain interprets the sights, sounds, smells and other sensations that you experience. If your brain couldn't help you understand these things, you would have trouble functioning, talking, going to school, and doing other everyday things. Kids can be mildly affected by autism so that they only have a little trouble in life or they can be very affected, so that they need a lot of help.

Autism affects more than 1 in every 150 kids, but no one knows what causes it. Some scientists think that some kids might be more likely to get autism because of similar or like disorders that can run in their families. Knowing the exact cause of autism is very hard because the human brain is very complicated. There is no cure for autism, but doctors, therapists, and special teachers can help kids with autism overcome or adjust to many difficulties. The earlier a child starts treatment for autism, the better.

Some kids with mild autism will grow up and are able to live on their own. Those with more serious problems will always need some kind of help. But all kids with autism have brighter futures when they have the support and understanding of doctors, teachers, caregivers, parents, siblings and friends.

So if you have a friend that has autism, do not look at them as if they are not your equal, because they are just another different person in the crowd. At the end of the day aren't we all different?

Alternative forms of Energy

I often think that if I could somehow find a way to bottle up the air at the middle school and pump it into my gas tank, or pour it into my furnace my children's college tuition would take care of itself. As soon as you walk into the middle school you can feel the energy and excitement for our the end of the year events.

This weekend the building will be filled with the amazing sounds of our High School Musical Jr performances- The children who have been working so diligently all year are bursting to get on stage Friday and Saturday to share their talents. I encourage everyone to come and view this event- It is absolutely AMAZING!

On Monday and Tuesday, May 23rd and 24th 8th grade students will be participating in the American Diploma Project's Algebra assessments.

End of year field trips, parties and traditional events like ball park day and the 8th grade volleyball game are coming together. I thank all of our room parents, the PTO and our staff for organizing these events for our children.

The excitement and energy are building, all of us are looking forward to the culmination of a terrific year.

Hand Held Pencil Sharpeners

Several students have been dismantling personal pencil sharpeners and using the blade to carve erasers, desks and other items. Due to the obvious safety issues surrounding this practice, I have instructed teachers to confiscate personal pencil sharpeners beginning May 10, 2011 and ask that you instruct your children to keep them home. Our classrooms are equipped with pencil sharpeners that are readily available for student use.

The word on the street.....

Murray Monster, the Sesame Street Reporter who investigates "The Scoop" hosts a video which discusses the importance of a healthy breakfast. I can repeat the script of this video verbatim...which can be a real pain when it is stuck in your head. The lesson of this video and the catchy mantras is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

As children grow, breakfast remains an important meal, albeit a difficult one. Middle Schoolers are not prone to be pleasant, smiling children first thing in the AM. A request from a parent for them to eat more than a piece of Trident can end up in an epic battle which many of us (myself included) do not venture into.

I am asking that we all venture into battle for the next four mornings and require breakfast as a meal from our middle school children. There is an overwhelming amount of research out there that supports the fact that eating a healthy breakfast is the first step to academic success. I have said many times that Stewartsville Middle Schoolers are the cream of the crop- our kids rise to the top regardless of the situation or the task presented to them. I know they will rise again this week during NJASK testing. Let's give them a "one up" and set them up each morning by requiring breakfast.

Inspiration

Looking out my office window, it is very easy to understand the inspiration of famous artists during this time of year. The cherry trees lining our driveway are in full bloom, as are my allergies. Mother Nature's ability to renew herself every spring is a true joy, inspiration and at times(when trying to breath through nasal passages) a major concern. In this way, I am also reminded of our teenage children.

On a daily basis I am inspired by your children. Their ability to renew themselves, accept change and difference is phenomenal. They work to meet the expectations of their teachers, achieve their goals, and be kind to one another. As parents of these children we so often are bombarded by the complete opposite- similar to Mother Nature's spring. As parents, we need to overlook the allergies our children bring to see the inspirational blossoms they are becoming.

Happy Spring everyone.....take time to "smell" the beauty in it.

On Friday, April 1st the New Jersey State Finals of the National Geography Bee were held at Rowan University. Stewartsville Middle School seventh grader, Kevin Pang, represented the district at this event. After a grueling competition, and a final death round- Kevin emerged victorious! He will represent the state in May at the National Finals in Washington D.C.

Please join me in congratulating Kevin on a job well done! We wish him success in Washington D.C. and know that he will represent the district well.

Barnes and Noble Book Fair

It is that time of year(ALREADY!)

Spring seems to come to the middle school earlier each year. Students become "twitterpated" (my daughter is SO into Bambi)sometimes causing them to disregard some school policy. The most disregarded policy is our dress code. I ask Mom and Dad to be on the lookout for these commonly disregarded dress code no-nos as your young ones leave for school each morning:

* Half-shirts or low cut shirts, see-through blouses, any type of shirt or blouse where any part of a midriff is showing, tank tops, spaghetti straps, and any other blouse/shirt deemed inappropriate by the administration.
* Dresses, shorts or skirts worn shorter than mid-thigh (fingertip length).
* Unlaced or untied sneakers or shoes, heels of shoes that are higher than 3 inches.
* Pajamas and lounge wear.
* Visible undergarments.
* Excessively baggy clothing.
* Clothing with holes

Celebrating Student Achievement

So often we tend to "glaze over" the good stuff our kids do because frankly, they are suppose to do good stuff. That is what we instill in them on a daily basis. It is easy to get hung up on discipline, consequences and the why behind bad choices.

I think it is time we take a moment to celebrate our children's achievements. Check out the virtual gallery on this website. Our student's artistic talents are represented here. The halls of the middle school are being decorated with photos and further art work which highlights even more talent. The Pillars of Character are filling up with names of students who are making positive choices each and every day. Students are working together in our ELA classes to support each other to reach amazing heights in their ability to read and write. Our seventh grade Science students have dissected a cow eye to understand the inter-working of our own ocular device. Eighth grade Social Studies classes are debating and discussing foreign policy of our fore fathers learning that history does repeat itself, over and over. Math classes are conquering problem solving and equations. Sixth grade Social Studies presents cooperative opportunities for students to investigate India.

And most of all, students are being kind to one another, helpful to adult staff, and good citizens in this building and out. I applaud our student body for everything they have already accomplished and the accomplishments that await.

The scheduling process for incoming freshman has begun. Our 8th grade virtual backpack contains many important documents parents will need to review with their children. Please take time to read the documents and discuss options with your child.

The scheduling worksheet will be sent home with students on Wednesday, February 9th. This worksheet will need to be completed and returned to SMS by Thursday, February 17th.

All students will need to complete a scheduling worksheet regardless of their anticipated enrollment at Phillipsburg High School.

Powerschool is a wonderful resource for students, parents and teachers. Teachers can use it to document student achievement, classwork and homework assignments and student progress. Students and parents can use it to identify areas of strength, weakness and pull up nightly/weekly homework assignments.

Powerschool should be students and parents first place to check for information.

The virtual backpack is also a useful tool for informative purposes. Teachers use the virtual backpack to post actual homework assignments(xerox copies, rubrics, directions) in the event that the original gets misplaced. Organizations use it to share a plethora of information as does the district. However, the virtual backpack is not the first place to check on student progress or daily homework assignments- that is the purpose of Powerschool.

Friendly Reminder.......

As the weather begins to become bitter cold and the winter winds blow we need to bundle up and take a look at our morning schedules.

Many of our students who normally walk to school will want to be driven....here's a refresher on the morning arrival procedures for those of you who haven't been a part of them since September.

1. All students are to remain in their parents parked cars prior to the 7:50 am whistle.
Students may not be dropped off at the gym lobby doors until faculty supervision is available at 7:50 am.

2. All cars are to remain parked until the "all clear" whistle is given. This whistle alerts parents that all children have safely crossed the driveway and are entering the building. If you are parked do not proceed to the parking lot exit until the "all clear" whistle is given.

Parent drop off morning procedures, when followed, take approximately three minutes to execute. Please be patient when dropping your child off in the AM to ensure the safety of all students.

Additionally, for the safety of our children refrain from dropping your child off on the shoulder of Main Street. The Greenwich Township Police will issue citations to vehicles who interrupt the flow of traffic in this manner.

It is the time of year when we all try to reflect on our families, careers, lives. We take the time to re-organize and make sure that we are giving what is most important to us top priority, giving thanks that we are so lucky to have lives that are so enriched and fruitful.

No matter where we all are at this time of year, I am sure that everyone can find one thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. Let's be sure to recognize that one thing(or many things) in our lives, to take time out, slow down and enjoy what we are thankful for.

I would like to thank all the Stewartsville families who share with us everyday. Your children are joys, who bring excitement and sunshine with them each morning. Who, no matter what challenges are presented, learn and change. We, as a middle school family, are blessed to have students who make positive choices and bring a positive energy with them each day.

Balanced Literacy

As the first marking period draws to a close, you will notice that the focus of our ELA classes will turn from whole class novels(shared reading) to guided reading groups. Students will begin to work collaboratively with their peers to dissect novels of the same genre on their individual reading levels. The following is a basic outline of how guided reading looks in a middle school setting:

Based on careful observation of students, the teacher selects books that are supportive, predictable, and closely matched to the students' needs, abilities, and interests. The chosen texts should support the objective, but be readable enough for students to proceed with minimal assistance. (Approximately 90-94% accuracy)*GTSD uses Fountas and Pinnell assessments to determine reading level
The guided reading lesson provides the opportunity for the teacher to interact with small groups of students as they read books that present a successful challenge for them.
The assessment provides information for the homogeneous groupings which are necessary for guided reading. This allows the teacher to tailor instruction to suit students' changing instructional needs.
The teacher acts as a facilitator who sets the scene, arouses interest, and engages students in discussion that will enable them to unfold the story line and feel confident and capable of reading the text themselves.
Guided reading is reading by students. The students are responsible for the first reading of the text.
Approximations and predictions are encouraged and praised. The teacher closely observes, monitors, and evaluates ways in which individual students process print utilizing reading strategies such as checking meaning and self-correcting.

Guided reading has been described in upper grades as "reading to learn" because students work to improve their comprehension and fluency in small group settings, problem solving and discussing collaboratively with their peers. The opportunity to provide reading instruction in this setting is exciting and offers individualized challenges in their daily ELA classes.

Life's Lessons

I am lucky enough to have a good friend whom I get to visit weekly on garbage days, she is a retired teacher of 45 years. Mildred is 102 years old. She taught middle school aged children through four decades of some of our nation's most memorable historical events. She lives alone, has over "1,350 children", and is sharp as a tack.....she remembers, reflects and offers unbias, honest, truthful advice. Mildred misses being in a classroom among children, if the "people in Trenton" would allow her, I think she'd be back in a heartbeat.

This week, when I went over to take out her garbage, she read a concerned look which had grown on my face. She knew why it was there, and how she was going to erase it away. "Even the best of them make poor choices Stephanie. It is not a reflection of who they are, but a second in their lives where their inner core of goodness was shadowed. Build them back up, tell them you are disappointed in their choice and then ask them how they are going to make it right....let them correct their behavior, it is more effective to make them reflect and change." I know she is right, and I know that together we can ensure our kids make better choices. I also know that she forgot a piece....

Children are at the core good, but that alone will not ensure that they will choose to do the right thing. They are influenced by so much negativity and violence which bombards them on a daily basis. We as adults need to make sure that we help them see through the negativity, and remember the good that is in them all. We need to model empathy and how we often choose to do the right thing even if the right thing isn't the path of least resistance. We need to let our children see that at times we too will struggle with decisions, but in the end when we do what we know is good and right we are rewarded.

As a sixth grade ELA teacher and Student Council Advisor, Bonnie Boyer has always been held in high regard by her students, parents and the staff she works with every day. We had no doubt that her nomination for Student Council Advisor of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Student Councils was well deserved.

We are so very proud to announce that Bonnie was named New Jersey's Student Council Advisor of the Year at the annual conference this morning. Congratulations goes out to Mrs. Boyer, it is so absolutely wonderful that she has been recognized in this capacity. She has a natural ability to inspire our students to become young leaders.

Last night, my eighth grader brought home an Algebra assignment. He was using charts to problem solve algebraic expressions to find the missing amount. He wasn't getting it.....and I was frustrated. We both went to bed upset- he was upset with me; and I was upset with his Dad, who was no help at all. My husband's response to our cries for help was that it had been twenty years since he had even seen an Algebra book.

This morning, I had the "aha" moment. If I had this difficulty with my eighth grader- being in my chosen profession, what was going on in the kitchens and dens of my "Stewartsville" eighth graders. Their parents, like my husband, have years between where they are now and an Algebra textbook.

Thanks to our Superintendent, Ms. Eppolite, I have a resource for our parents(and my husband). Please take a moment to check out www.khanacademy.org. This site offers tutorials in Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and the Sciences. It offers step by step support to those of us who hit a wall when trying to explain to their teenager, who already knows everything, about why they need to solve algebraic expressions using charts.

Empowered

In the past few weeks bullying and harassment issues have re-entered the front page spotlight. The suicide of Tyler Clementi, a gifted musician at Rutgers University, has sparked the media's never ending quest to almost glorify the subject. We read the news reports, listen to the specials presented on the television and think, "what a tragedy". Unfortunately, that is all some of us do is think, we need to begin to act. Action against bullying and harassment is the only way to stop it from happening.

This Fall we have had a growing concern regarding the level of harassment which has been reported to us. The faculty, staff and administration have reacted quickly to each incident. However, in hindsight, reaction isn't the only way to combat this behavior. We need to be proactive.

Proactive- we need to empower all of our children to be their own advocates.
Proactive- we need to empower all of our children to trust that the adults in their lives will protect them.
Proactive- we need to educate our children to the face of a bully, the voice of a bully, the snickers of a bully.
Proactive- we need to empower all of our children to walk away, and then seek help.
Proactive- we need to call out bullies, call out the behavior for what it is, and provide outlets for change.

We need to work together, open lines of communication and make everyone aware that we as parents, educators, adults will not and do not tolerate teasing, name-calling, pushing, or behavior that isolates- from anyone in our children's lives.

This Week at SMS

We have a busy week planned for the middle school.

Picture Days are Wednesday and Thursday this week- Please remember to send in a completed envelope regardless of order status (we need the envelope back even if you are not ordering pictures)

We will have a bus evacuation drill on October 5th. This will not interfere with our normal dismissal procedures.

On Wednesday, October 6th the district will celebrate International Walk to School Day. Walk to School is celebrated all around the world. This year the makers of Green Works products are participating by offering $5,000 grants to the schools that get the most people walking during the month of October. Sometimes it rains....

or snows or is extremely cold and we plan accordingly. We bring umbrellas, snow boots, or a heavy coat. We have learned to be flexible and have a plan.

Parents, if your child walks/bikes to school we also need to develop a plan for inclement weather. This week I learned two things- I need rain boots and I need to encourage planning among our walking population.

If your child usually walks to school, and you need to pick them up due to inclement weather or a change in your schedule I ask you to refrain from meeting them along Main Street. If your child has a cell phone leave them a message and then call the school. We will get the message out. Additionally, if you alert either myself or Mrs. Hamilton by 2:15(12:15 on early dismissal days) in the parking lot we will radio in for Mrs. Frinzi to call your child over the loud speaker to alert him/her that you are here to pick them up.

On several occasions during this rainy week we had parents pull off the road for their child to hop into the car. I thank our lucky stars that other drivers were cautious and alert enough to realize what was occurring. We could have easily had a rear collision which could have had dire consequences.

When our plans change we need to be flexible and work together to ensure the safe passage of all our children. Please do not hesitate to alert us to your change of plans.

By this time next week we will be enjoying a smooth ride down a newly paved county road.....this week we are dealing with the headache caused by lane closures and trucks, lots and lots of trucks.

Rest assured, that we are aware of the problems many of you faced this morning, and will continue to deal with until Greenwich Street is completed. Be safe, flexible and try to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level as your middle school student sits beside you screaming that he/she will be late to school because of something completely out of your control, but in the mind of a teenager(or preteen), is completely their parents' fault!

Positive Choices

Many afternoons this week, I walked Main Street to watch our Middle School students on their route home. I was curious to observe our students interact outside of the building. I had been alerted by some parents that many of our students were making questionable decisions regarding appropriate behavior.

What I witnessed were children, being children. Walking together, laughing, yelling, but for the most part following what was expected of them. They were making positive choices, walking on the sidewalks, being respectful of others property, controlling themselves and generally watching out for one another.

The positive choices the children were making came from discussions. These discussions were held around the dinner table, on route to practice, or while sitting in the family room watching TV. I thank the parents who have had these discussions with their children. It is a privilege to work with such a fantastic group of kids.

Reminders for Morning Dismissal

As the weather begins to change and more parents begin to transport their children to school there are two important points parents must remember to ensure student safety:

1. All students are to remain in their parents parked cars prior to the 7:50 am siren.
Students may not be dropped off at the gym lobby doors until faculty supervision is available.

2. All cars are to remain parked until the "all clear" signal is given. This signal alerts parents that all children have safely crossed the driveway and are entering the building. If you are parked do not proceed to the parking lot exit until the "all clear" signal is given.

Parent drop off morning procedures, when followed, take approximately three minutes to execute. Please be patient when dropping your child off in the AM to ensure the safety of all students.

Accessing Your Child's Homework/Assignments

All teachers in the middle school are using PowerSchool to post assignments. By Monday, September 13th, you will be able to log on and view core assignments for the week. Please remember that these assignments may at times change because of unforeseen circumstances within the classroom.

As a reminder please log-on to PowerSchool and check your demographic information. This can be amended to update any changes in phone numbers, email addresses, etc.

PowerSchool Instructions:
* Login to PowerSchool access from the district website(www.gtsd.net)using your assigned username and password
*Click on the column under the appropriate marking period(M1-M4) and desired core class(ex: Science7)
*The screen which will open is called "Class Score Detail"
*Scroll down
*Assignments are located near the bottom of that screen

Homework assignments will also be posted in grade level virtual backpacks. To view these assignments:

An Exciting Week

Our first week was a success, students fell right back into the school routine. We are looking forward to our fall academic activities, clubs and the promise of cooler weather.

Phillipsburg Songfest- Rescheduled

Phillipsburg Songfest was rescheduled to Monday, March 29th. Rehearsal will begin at 5 pm and the performance is at 7 pm. We have over 50 students participating this year!!

No transportation will be provided. Parent must drop off/pick up at Phillipsburg High School. Admission is $1.00, children under 5 are free.

We look forward to an exciting evening of sweet music!

It is hard to believe that as I look out the window at the beautiful Stewartsville landscape a light coating of snow is gently falling from the sky. It is the busy winter season once again. When my teenagers were younger I used to cherish this time of year. The colder weather would bring lazy days, comfort food, and quiet family evenings.

As all of you are more than aware, it seems that the older our children become the busier each season seems to be. The quietness of winter has been replaced with winter sporting events, chorus and band concerts, dances, trips to the movie theatre, and various school or extra curricular events.

I remind all of you to continuously check our school website for upcoming events and special announcements. If ever you have any questions or concerns regarding the events here at the middle school please feel free to call or stop by. I have been enjoying meeting our parents and community members. It has been such an enjoyable year.

I hope that all of you find time to relax and enjoy your families this season.

The PTO has diligently worked for two years to bring this unique experience to the Middle School. Accessing Homework on PowerSchool

Accessing your child's homework assignments can be done on a daily basis through the PowerSchool access on the district's homepage. In September, each family received their own username and password to view their child's grades. This has been the case in the district for a few years. When you are viewing your child's gradebook, if you click on the actual grades in blue, the homework assignments for the day/week will open in a new window. Please use this tool to help your child keep up with their daily assignments or long term projects. If you are having trouble accessing this information please contact the school.

The Weeks Ahead

Meteorologists have promised a beautiful fall weekend. We are looking forward to this time to relax and enjoy our families. Students will be participating in fall activities throughout the area, taking time to renew before another exciting week of school.

A Look Ahead

After a wonderful first week here at the middle school we are turning our sights to weeks ahead. The students are making decisions about electives, after school activities, and their daily schedules.

We are especially excited about a unique opportunity which has been given to our nation’s student body. For the first time in history, a United States president will be talking directly to students on what is traditionally the first day of school about the importance of education. We are planning on tuning in to President Obama’s address and being a part of this historic opportunity. Students will then have an opportunity for discussion during their Social Study core. What a pleasure it was to meet the 310 smiling faces whom walked through our doors this morning. Students were eager to greet old friends, share summer stories and get back into the swing of school. Teachers may have been more eager than students to get the school year started, they have opportunities to explore new technology, curriculum materials and instructional methods with their classes this year. I am looking forward to a wonderful new year here at the Stewartsville Middle School.

As eager as I was to meet your children I am looking forward to meeting all of you. I am hoping that you can reserve time in your calendar for an informal meet and greet session in the Middle School Cafeteria on Thursday, September 10th at 7:00. This time will be a wonderful opportunity for all of us to extend greetings to one another and make introductions prior to getting into the hectic schedule that the fall brings.

This summer has been a whorl-wind of activity, filled with change and exciting opportunities for all of us. I am anxiously awaiting my transition to the Stewartsville Middle School Team. I am learning the ins and outs of what I expect to be an exciting opportunity within the Greenwich School District. Mrs. Alercia has been keeping me updated to building changes, schedules and procedures so that school’s opening in September is as smooth as possible. I cannot thank her enough for her help, I know that many of you will miss her and we all wish her a relaxing, fun filled retirement.
I am looking forward to meeting the Stewartsville family. Please feel free to stop in to stay hello and introduce yourself. I am planning several meet and greet activities for September to give us a chance to get to know one another.
